Hey guys, I was ofered a deal, changing my fender stratocaster (a gift that I've never used) for a Hollywood hollowbody bass guitar. I was told that this basses were manufactured in Japan around the years 60's and 70's, and they tried to emulate gibson basses (the ones that were like the 335 guitar)... I don't know why but this deal seems to me like a good one. The bass in fact is quite old, it looks like shit, but sound amazing... I mean, should I change it?... What do you think?... and more important, do anybody knows anything about this basses?... I've tried serching on the net, but Haven't found anything...

no no no.... What I'm wondering is if anybody of you knows this brand called "Hollywood"... I mean, I would only change it if the bass is cool, but I don't really know...

i for one would not give a fender strat for a totally unknown bass. "hollywood" from japan... sorry, but it already sounds rubbish. you better sell your fender and you'll get more value for your money for sure.

yeh i agree with apache, if it was a good brand then im sure some of us would have heard of it and they'd still be in business! or there'd be something about it on the web but there isnt so it sounds dodgy.

Well... now it's everything clear about this tread.

Holywood did good basses, but not for a long time. They were beaten by gibson, because they were doing good basses with good prices... The thing, is that this instrument is in fact, so old an used that it's not worth the tread. I went to the store where the sell it with a luthier that worked with Leo Fender for many years ( ! ), and he told me that was not worth because of the money I would have to pay to fix it as it should be fixed.

By the way, do not think that my stratocaster and jazz bass are in fact a "good" quality instruments. Since they are mexican, they are below the american standars, so they are good, sound cool, but they are cheap... It's something strange, but I've been told to many times, that now, most of the american instruments that fender make are made in Mexico, the thing is that they just take them to the States and mark them. I mean, there's no big difference between them. If you have a mexican jazz bass for example, you could grow it for a little amount of money and have an excelent instrument. You know, good picukps and other parts... Nothing more needed.
