View Full Version : I still won't watch soccer . . . um, I mean Football.
Beckham goes to LA??! This sport does not exist in the states on the pro level. I mean, we have pro teams, but the only audience is adolecent kids on a field trip with their team.
Is this about money or breaking into the U.S. market? I can't imagine some LA football team putting up a number higher than some European team.

Million a week would do rather nicely though ey
250 million for 5 years.
good god
Really, Becks needs to know something about Americans. We like our Brits to fit a certain persona. The U.S. market prefers the clean cut, gentlemanly pervert, like Hugh Grant. History will prove that we don't dig the scruffy, arrogant, hot headed, controversial pervert, like Robbie Williams, JK, and Oasis. They have there moments, but they just don't last.

i think it's safe to say that if he's decided to play for a U.S. team, his motivation isn't money. maybe he wants to be in movies. hopefully he does good for the team. brings in lots of fans, ya know?
i like football and everything, but it really isn't worth watching it in the states. thank goodness for Fox Soccer Channel.
Yes, exactly. We should be expecting the actor/sports star career. He may even release an album, or run for office.
I expect the romantic comedy costarring Kate Hudson where he plays a washed up british soccer player who finds his muse in a perky american blonde. His carreer is resurrected and Robbie Williams plays his best friend.

Lets be honest, he's not the player he once was...and i never rated him that highly anyway.
He'll do a good thing for Americans though, and they might actually start calling football, football and not soccer! lol :)
Dare you say, Simon!!!
There is the one and only one Football in the states, and thats the nasty gridiron of ass slapping, the NFL.
Your right, Simon, it might be good for Americans. Hockey was nothing in the states until LA bought Wayne Gretsky, then it blew up. There saying Ronaldo might be the next to come.
I love it, actually, and I caught the World Cup back in the mid 90's when it was in Dallas, Texas. I saw S. Korea vs. Germany.

yeah but... dude... DB's worth way more than 1 million a week to this LA club... it's all just business... DB's an investment
if any of us were offered half a million or a million a week for playing a game doing what we were born to do... would we turn it down?
you could retire in just one month if you wanted :D

Which just shows how arrogant Americans are on the whole, to dismiss the most popular sport in the world so flippantly, and spend their time watching "American Football". A more boring sport to watch than this I can't imagine.
Oh wait...........baseball.

But American football just seems like a move backwards from Rugby which is run at a pack of guys and get crunched or get through hah.

F1 supporter here too.
No overtaking my ass!! Well today's race was a good one for that..
At least so far, its a season worth watching. As a Mclaren supporter for 10-11 years, its great to see that we've got a decent car this year and the Brits finally have a good driver in a competitive car... Although DC's drive today was bloody awesome to watch.

The races have been good this year so far, although lately (last 3-4 years) overtaking has become rarer, that what I meant.
I used to be a Ferrari supporter, but after the Schumi domination, I switched to just supporting the Brit drivers (but I did that anyway) :P
So glad for McLaren after a winless year, Fernando and Lewis challenging Ferrari :) DC did a fantastic drive! Shame that both Red Bull's retired...:(

Not at all, because at least you can appreciate football as a sport, even if it isn't to your taste. But Americans dismiss it as "just" 22 men running after a ball, and seem oblivious to the fact that its the most popular sport in the world. It's almost as though they're being stubborn on purpose. But American Football has got to be one of the most boring sports ever to watch. Stop, start, stop, start......each game seems to take about 6 hours!!
And baseball's even worse! If the commentary team can't even get excited over what they're seeing, how can I be expected to?

I'm not a huge fan of F-1 (or any kind of "racing" sports in general) but it certainly beats the ass off Nascar. How anyone's life can be so dull and boring that they would get excited about a bunch of hicks driving left for 5 hours is beyond me. At least F-1 has interesting tracks. I'm really into drift races, though.

Even if Mexico wasn't part of North America (which is just a geographical divition), I still think there are some shamefull racist thing going on. I have a very good friend who lives in the states, all done in a VERY legal way, actually, and he's always stugling in between white and african-american people, not to do a generalization, but its hard to be a latin guy in a country like that.
But, this is going off topic right here, so let's go back to the main topic. (eventhough, the topic itself its very off topic, lol)
Same problem everywhere...
In the US, black and latino people are considered as bad guys, here in France there's the same problem with Arabs...
What a shame...
Alfred Jazz Punker
16-04-2007, 12:45 AM
Yeah, Arabs have this problem too...
I mean, isn't enough to have to leave your place to search for better life conditions, to even have a racist problem on your shoulders????
In the states they complaint about latin people, but at the same time, they use the latin guys for the worst paid jobs, and they complain when they don't have enough cheap craftmanship... I mean, why??????

MMM , thats a shame !!! here its the same with arabs !!!!
I think the only way to stop the emigration its to help all that counties with economy problems !!! .... no wars .. no nuclear weapons !!! only help for those who need it.
I can say that in my conutry .. yes we have problems ..... and yes .... we need to migrate to another place to learn that what we cant in our place !!! ... but hope we could fix that on the following years .
Yup......agreed

Well, since the "on-topic boat" left the harbor ages ago, I might as well add my thoughts on this...
Nobody's forcing Latin Americans to take the jobs that they do. It's just that they're willing to do them for the least amount of money, so naturally they're the ones that are going to be picked for the job. And, I don't really think anybody is complaining about a lack of cheap labor...is there even a lack of cheap labor?

Well cool. :D I'm planning to go to British GP next year. :D
Same old story with the vast majority of USA citizens oblivious to the world outside their own shores.
Yeah, got a prime example of that, can't remember what program it was on, though. This guy was going around the streets of New York, and asking questions to people bout foriegn countries.
Example:
"What is the capital of Italy?"
*No response*
"Name 3 countries in Europe."
"Errrr, Cuba? *laughs* I dunno, errr, Asia?"
They really should get some knowledge of the outside world.
I see what you mean...
But ask the average European the capital of Venezuela or Chile...
True, very true. I know the capital of Chile lol (Not Venezuela, though. Sorry.)
But, Asia?! At least we know that is a continent.
Being asked what continent Turkey is in confuses me. :P Even the capital is split between two. :P
Wrong !
The city that's split in two is Istanbul, right ? One part on the continental Europe, the other part in Middle Eastern ?
But that ain't the capital, the capital is Ankara !
Wrong !
Damn it! :P
The city that's split in two is Istanbul, right?
Yea, that's what I was thinking.

Oh well, you can tell I didn't do Geography at GCSE. :P

And, I don't really think anybody is complaining about a lack of cheap labor...is there even a lack of cheap labor?
I know what you mean.
But its hard sometimes to reach to a real and objective point of view when talking about this. A lot of the latin guys come from regions where they have nothing. I mean, really nothing.
Recently I was watching this TV report, about people in some parts of the east of the country, doing some farm jobs. Earning about 3 US dollars at week... after more than 50 hours in 5 days of work that is nothing. Well, so they go to the states and get paid much more than that. Is just that, from the point of view of what people in the states get paid for anything, that its again... nothing. See what I mean?
On the lack of the cheap labor. I remember clearly that when this thing about the frontier wall begun, many farmers from the US started to complain about the politics and the fact that they werent able to reach some cheap labor... Because of that, they were loosing what they had on their farms, but the US government did what has been doing for years, paid for those products, let them rotten in the fields, so that way no one would complain.
Which leads to another point. This way, the US controls exactly the price of anything beinr grown in a farm of America (yes, canada and south america included), because they don't even worry to sell everything they grow on farms, but keep the farmers occupied. That's why we sell our products so cheap, because we have no other option, is that or nothing, and that is why workers on here have no job...
Simple. Yeah, nobody is pointing this guy's a revolver, but going to the real world facts...
