I've had my iMac now for 5 years and it has served me really well. Still does all I need, but a bit more slowly. Hard drive hasn't got a lot of space left, I blew the speakers, so now have a subwoofer/speaker arrangement and the drive packed in, so I have an external DVD/CD/etc drive.

The question is, should I replace it with an all new singing and dancing iMac? Give me reasons for your answers.

What should I do with the old one if I replace it? I doubt I'd get much interest if I tried to sell it.

I'm going through the same thing with my 4-year old Powerbook. Its hard drive is full and it's about as fast as a tortoise, full of rigamortis.

The new iMacs kick ass and they're cheap. Go check out the 20" ones matey... they're a bit cheaper than the 24" (which are pretty huge!).

I can't imagine you'd be able to sell your old iMac mate...

I can afford the 24", that's not the issue. It's a guilt thing, really. Sounds stupid, but I keep thinking if I go for it I'm just giving into the God of consumerism. My other option would be to stick a new hard drive in my current iMac and stick some more RAM in there.

It's GAS all over again, except I don't need to work on my keyboard skills like my bass ones. ;-)

(It's okay, I did an hour practice tonight, so I feel good, I'm seeing bass progress :D )

The differences between the current iMacs and ones that are five year old ones are beyond hard drive space and RAM.

if you want it, buy it... who gives a crap about consumerism?

I have a few friends (interestingly ALL in IT) who won't buy any Apple product because of the above reason and the 'hype'. Sounds like bullsh*t to me! :)

Anyway, they can have their crappy 128MB Flash players and I'll have my nice touch screen iPod. Oh, and enjoy Windows Vista too!

I binned PCs 5 years ago and have no regrets, other than I even bothered with PCs in the first place. Apple products are a cut above anything else.

I'll probably do what I always do in these situations. Agonise about it for a few months and then go and get one anyway.

What to do with my old one though. I would hate just to chuck it on a skip, though. there is always Freecycle I suppose. If I wiped the hard drive prior to giving it away are there any issues with security? In theory everything on that drive is recoverable? Bank details etc?

Keep it, turn it into a server for your music files/ video files etc!

Bloody good thinking, that man.

A bit technical for me, but I'm sure a little research and I could do that quite easily. Would Airport be a helpful addition if I wanted to do that?

do you have a wireless network at the moment?

I actually bought my iMac just so it would run more smoothly with my iPod than the windows based PC I had at the time.

iMac looks 1,000 times better than a PC, runs more smoothly and doesn't get hassled by viruses - I can't see me ever switching back to PC anytime in the foreseeable future.

Nope, but I could stick it somewhere out of the way. Then I'd have the hassle of hunting it out and turning it on every time I wanted to listen to something or watch something on the other hard drive.

Amen, brother!

As an aside, Kev, have you ever played an Alleva Coppola? If so, what they like?

Never played an Alleva yet (but will have a chance in January at Paul's house). Paul is really comfortable right now with the Alleva's spacing and overall feel. The basses are extremely basic, just very well made with no fancy frills.

The only thing Paul didn't like was the normal pickups they fit - the flat poles caused a drop in volume on the middle strings due to the neck's curvature (10" radius). Jimmy at Alleva-Copollo made a custom set with staggered polepieces which helped to reduce the problem. Still not 100% (acording to Paul), but has made the whole package much better.

Would you mind posting a report on how you find it? I'd be very interested. My girlfriend has a birthday in late January and I might take her to New York. I've never been(only been to the States twice, EBMM events)but she has worked over there and loves New York, so a detour to Jimmys' emporium might be in order.

mate let me know if you come over!

I'd love to see you play live. I'd never go bass shopping with you, though. You would show me up so much. However, you're an Aussie, so we would have some great beers. My missus is not a typical bird, she drinks with the best of them, so we'd have a great time.

Wait     You're now going to tell me you are tee total, aren't you! :( ;-)

mate, hopefully I'll be in a band when you get here and will actually be playing... :(

there's a vintage guitar store on my street and another a few blocks away... plenty of basses to check out

and don't worry, we can drink with the best of them.

To get back on the Mac thing, same for me than Kevin: I cannot see myself going back to PC anytime soon. Macs are just... better ! For my use, they're perfect. Runs perfectly, perfect match with my iPods (yeah Sandriche babe, iPodS :D lol), no viruses, etc...

I'm happy with my Macbook, but next year I'll probably go for an iMac and keep the Macbook for my life outside home. Next upgrade will be Leopard on my Macbook.
