Hi,
found this interview with some guy on the internet which briefly mentions Stuart Zender and a band called Spannerman that he played in before Jamiroquai. Don't know if people already know this - sorry if I'm repeating old info. It's not very enlightening, but I thought I'd pass it on. They mispell his name "Zehnder". The band is listed as having one cassette recording called "Leave it Mandy". Here's the link...

Hey Marshall, welcome to the site (I ain't been here long either). That's interesting news, I'd be interested in hearing some of his stuff before Jamiroquai to see what it was like!

Thanks Liam, thanks Simon - I'd been checking the site for a while but hadn't gotten round to posting on the message board.
Yeah it would be interesting to get hold of a copy of the recording (assuming it is Stuart Zender playing on it). Maybe someone will track it down
Interesting, thanks Marshall!
Also, did anyone see this? >
Webcore - formed in Cornwall in 1984 and lasted until 1987. Released several self-released cassettes, 2 LP's and 2 12"s through Jungle Records.
Mick West - Vox
Phil Pickering - Bass
Paul Chousmer - Keys
Clive Goodwin - Guitar - later Ozrics sound engineer
Colin Woolway - Drums
Nick Van Gelder - Drums - had played with the Ozrics earlier-went on to Jamiroquai
Dan Carpenter - Sax occasionally
Mike ??? - left to join a monastery
Jackie Hannah - backing vox
Karen Kay - backing vox
Jason Kay's mum was in a band with first Jamiroquai drummer Nick van Gelder. How surprising is that? I wonder if David Rowe (for example) knew that! lol

Yeah, good spot Rob!
The other weird thing is that I have a teacher who is a keyboard player and his name is Paul Chousmer  - How weird is that - I will have to ask him if he has heard of Spannerman :P

I have that on cassette. It's called "Leave it Mandy". It's raw, but it's still some pretty good bass playing. You can tell that Stu's just starting out, but he's clearly on his way. If Simon emails me his address, I'll mail him the tape. I suppose it's only a matter of time before some of you start asking, "Who is this guy, and how does he get all of this stuff?"

Damn... what was his age when he did those recordings?
I mean... he was like 18 when started with Jamiroquai isn't it?

Turns out that Paul Chousmer is one of my teachers 8) ....I asked him about the Spannerman project and we had a chat about it!
He said Stu played bass in the group when he was quite young - just 15/16. He used to come in and sit in on rehearsals and play on the drum kit, and eventually switched to bass.
Jackie Hannah, the backing singer of the group, is in fact Stu's sister and that is the link of him being in the band. Nick van Gelder played for these guys and the Ozric Tentacles also.
Paul cites, they would often get frustrated with Stu as he would never practice, and then once in rehearsal he would play all of the time! It got to the point where Paul was considering talking to him about it, when stu got a better job and left - Jamiroquai! :P
Fascinating stuff eh... Paul's a really nice guy and hope to chat to him more about it sometime!
thats unbelievable news si mate, awesome stuff,
and a funny story about our man z, its a heck of a jump to go from arsing around in spannerman to getting jamiroquai, just shows you how close knit the band already was, i wonder how further the zender roots go or if that was the foundations just imagine if he didnt go to those practice sessions and get himself involved, we certainly wouldnt be on here today talking about it,
awesome stuff,
Ben,
I wonder if it was really true that Stu just started playing bass 2 years before he went to Jamiroquai...not the most important thing though...
very cool story, I gotta say... It's a small world (there, in the UK! lol)

Yeah... I think I saw once in a magazine or something like that, an enterview with Zender, where he said that he didin't practiced that much...

Hi,
I've got a copy of the tape too. There was an annual festival in Avignon (in 1991 I think) where a lot of the people who were in Archaos performed in other shows. Spannerman played as well and Stuart was part of the group and especially hung out with some mutual friends which is which is how I over a period of 2 weeks or so talked to him many times in Avignon (where the festival was), Ales (where Archaos has a camp-base) and in a place called La Grange where there was a big party where Spannerman played. I only saw him again once or twice after that and we're not friends or anything, but he was very nice as was everyone else in Spannerman. Some of the members also went on to form a band called Thunderdogs, where Stuart is thanked in the credits (I don't think he plays on the album though).
The Spannerman tape is not that great, though I thought it was at the time, maybe because I'd seen the songs performed in context. Maybe I can transfer one or two of the songs from tape to my computer and upload them but I don't know if I'm actually allowed to do so but if there's no protest from those who are in charge of this community I'll see what I can do.

I hope it'd be ok to do it... the band doesn't exist anymore. The material was never officially released... the members went on etc etc. It shouldn't be a problem really. In fact, they may very well be honoured that someone actually cares about what they did such a long time ago. I dunno...
Let's see what the almighty Merrick says. ;)

Personally, 'I' made a promise to a member of the band that 'I' wouldn't share it. I don't have any objections providing that, if someone does ask it to be removed it will be. May also be more curtious to post samples instead of full tracks (60 secs or so), as permission hasn't been given to share?

Hi Simon,
alright, maybe it's best not to share it then.
Anyway, I don't come here everyday but I will look back on the forum occasionally and if I see at some point that it's alright for me to post some of the songs then I'll happily share.

Alright, since Simon has been told not to share the demo tape I won't either, however I also have a live recording from one of the Spannerman-performances from the festival in Avignon (early nineties) so I'll post brief samples from two of the songs to give an impression of what kind of music it was and Stuart's bass-playing at the time.

Bloody awful!!!!!
The first track sounds like the theme tune to Benny Hill!!!
The second sounds like they are about to treat us to a rendition of "My Old Man's A Dustman"!!!!!
